Learning Pathway 1

School Community Gardens

School gardens are much more than just green spaces within schools; they are dynamic outdoor learning environments where students engage in hands-on, interactive education. The Gardeniser Academy – School Community Gardens online learning programme is designed to support teachers, educators, and community members in creating, managing, and enhancing school gardens as educational and social tools. Through a multidisciplinary and participatory approach, this programme provides the knowledge and skills needed to develop educational projects based on sustainability, inclusion, and active student engagement.

The course is structured into four modules, each covering a key aspect of establishing and managing a school garden while fostering connections with the local community:

Module 1
This module introduces the concept of community gardens, exploring their educational, social, and environmental value. Gardens are not merely spaces for growing food; they serve as learning hubs that encourage responsibility towards the environment and community engagement. This module helps learners understand the functions of school and community gardens, their positive societal impact, and the importance of active participation in their management.
Module 2
This module delves into the educational value of school gardens as innovative teaching tools. Cultivating a garden at school not only helps students learn science, mathematics, and sustainability concepts but also fosters essential life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and ecological awareness. A school garden becomes an experiential learning space that stimulates curiosity, improves student well-being, and promotes a healthier lifestyle.
Module 3
This module provides practical guidelines for designing and managing a successful school garden. Key topics include selecting a suitable site, utilising available resources, involving the school community, and integrating garden activities into the curriculum. Additionally, it offers activity sheets to help students and teachers understand natural cycles, cultivation techniques, and sustainable agricultural practices, making the garden an active learning laboratory.
Module 4
A school garden does not exist in isolation; it can serve as a bridge between schools and the wider community. This module focuses on fostering partnerships with existing community gardens by engaging experts, volunteers, and local organisations in shared educational projects. It provides a guide on how to identify community gardens, initiate collaborations, share resources, and create support networks to ensure the long-term success of educational garden projects.
